Block annoying Facebook posts
Q. I’m tired of wading through Facebook posts about games and celebrities. Is there a simple way to filter out the junk?
A. One quick way to clean up your feed is by hovering over a post you don’t want to see. Click the arrow that appears and select “I don’t want to see this.” Facebook gives you the option of hiding all posts from that friend or app. If you just want to target certain subjects, a third-party plug-in that replaces posts you don’t want to see with pictures of cats, or anything else you’d rather see.
Buying the best tablet for your money
Q. I’m shopping for a new tablet, but I’m not sure how to pick the right one. Any suggestions?
A. At this point the choice between tablets is a matter of preference. Head to the store and try out a range of Android and Apple tablets. See which operating system and tablet size you feel most comfortable using.
For Android, the Google Nexus 7 and 10 are good starting points. With Apple, the iPad Air is the best value for money, unless you really need a smaller iPad mini. If you need a really low-cost option that offers decent quality, check out the Barnes & Noble Nook HD tablets.
Ditch cable and still watch your favorite shows
Q. Is it true I can cancel cable and still watch my favorite shows?
A. It depends on the shows. See if your favorite shows are streaming online with the Can I Stream It? site. If they are, you can stream them to your computer, Internet-connected HDTV, modern video game consoles or third-party gadgets like a Roku box or Apple TV. There’s also the new Google ChromeCast. It plugs into your TV and streams video from a compatible smartphone or tablet. Click here to learn more about streaming video to your living room.
Essential apps for your Mac
Q. I just bought my first Mac and I see there’s a Mac App store. Are there any good apps to buy?
A. Yes! Disk Diag is a free utility app that quickly scans your folders for duplicate files and removes them to free up disk space. It can help keep your Mac running like new. Found helps you quickly find files, no matter where they are. It searches across desktop folders and cloud-based services like Dropbox, Evernote, SkyDrive and Google Drive. It’s also free. Apps every business owner needs
Q. I bought a smartphone to help me run my business and I wanted to know what apps you recommend.
A. Take a look at Evernote for keeping track of ideas and collaborating with co-workers. Asana is great for keeping you on schedule and assigning tasks to complete. For promoting your business on social media, HootSuite is a great tool. You can manage your social accounts from one app. Click here to learn what other apps every business owner needs.
