As the only record store left in Charleston, Monster Music & Movies doesn’t have to worry about elbowing its competitors from the spotlight on Black Friday. Instead, the store will debut nearly 100 albums, which are sold exclusively at participating stores across the country during the Back to Black Friday event.

The nationwide initiative is sponsored by Record Store Day, a group established in 2007 to keep local record stores in business. Labels and independent musicians have partnered with the organization to offer record stores exclusive new releases.

Monster Music at 946 Orleans Road near Citadel Mall will open at 8 a.m. Friday to unveil the new collection which includes releases from Nirvana, Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews Band and more. Another anticipated item is the poster art book from Widespread Panic, said general manager Galen Hudson.

In the spirit of Black Friday, Hudson said the shop will offer special promotions as well. Some customers in line at the door by 8 a.m. will win $100 gift certificates, and they’ll have 10-20 percent off sales throughout the store. Go to www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases to see the complete list of exclusive album releases.

Luck of the draw

Six shoppers will win $500 gift certificates to Mount Pleasant Towne Centre stores on Friday in a series of raffles. Drawings will be at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at Belk; 11 a.m. and noon at Barnes & Noble; and 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. at Banana Republic.

Those who don’t win at the first drawing will be entered in all the subsequent drawings, so it pays off to register early, said Erin Engebritson, the center’s marketing manager.

Just in time

Gift-ology is showing up just in time for the busy shopping weekend in Northwoods Mall. The new gift boutique opens at 6 a.m. on Black Friday and will offer 15 percent off sales on items throughout the store.
