Sumner Cooler put a frost on the Bishop England season.
Cooler, Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s quarterback with the interesting name combination, passed for 157 yards and two touchdowns as the Red Raiders ended the Bishops’ two-year reign as Division II-AA state champs with a 27-20 victory Friday night in front of about 2,000 fans at Jack Cantey Stadium.
The Red Raiders improved to only 7-5 but remain alive in the playoffs. They travel to Silver Bluff next weekend for a third-round game. The Bishops, who had a nine-game playoff winning streak snapped, checked out with a 9-3 record.
“We play in a region that has a tough game every week,” Bamberg-Ehrhardt coach Kevin Crosby said. “We play a team like this every week. We’re used to big games. We got a big effort from our quarterback and wide receivers. We had one running back (RaQuan Brown) go down with an injury and another (Tyrell Wilson) who stepped up in the second half.”
The Bishops entered Friday’s game against Bamberg-Ehrhardt averaging 231 yards rushing — and eight pass attempts — per game. They went to the air for their first score, a 22-yard reception by David Hull on a pass from Reed Fosberry.
Cooler throw his first touchdown pass to KC Crosby to tie the score at 7-7.
The Bishops’ Nick Shiver raced 60 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, but it was the other B-E who controlled most of the game.
Brown scored on a 3-yard run late in the first half to tie it at 14-14.
Early in the third quarter, Cooler led the Red Raiders on a flawless 80-yard drive. Cooler had some big runs on the drive and culminated it with his arm, finding Garrett Zeigler open in the endzone for an 11-yard score that gave the visitors their first lead of the game, 21-14, with 5:12 left in the third quarter.
“That first drive (of the second half) was critical,” Bishop England coach John Cantey said. “They did what we usually do and that’s run the football. We couldn’t stop them.”
The Bishops struck back quickly as Shiver broke off a 36-yard touchdown run. But the PAT attempt was wide and the Raiders led 21-20.
But Cooler and Co. came right back with a scoring drive that was highlighted by Cooler’s 11-yard pass on third-and-four at the BE 26. Wilson scored on a 15-yard TD on the next play to make it 27-20 with 5:15 left in the game.
Wilson, who replaced the injured Brown, carried 17 times for 72 yards, all in the second half.
The Bishops had one last chance, but a pass into the endzone fell incomplete with 1:27 left in the game.
The Red Raiders outgained the Bishops 310-227 in total offense. Shiver finished with 130 yards and two scores on 11 carries to lead the Bishops. Fosberry completed 8 of 13 for 70 yards.
