A West Ashley man has been charged with filing a false report after telling police he was wounded in a drive-by shooting.
It turned out that Corey Renaldo Gabe Jr., 20, of Hazelwood Drive actually shot himself in the leg when a gun he had hidden in his waistband accidentally went off, according to investigators with the Charleston Police Department.
Officers were called to St. Francis Hospital about 5:20 p.m. last Tuesday to check out a gunshot wound, according to the police affidavit. At first Gabe told them he was shot in the right calf from a passing car while standing in a driveway of a house on Hazelwood Drive.
The investigation didn’t add up, and officers went back to question Gabe. This time he told them he shot himself and went back home and changed clothes before going to the hospital, according to the affidavit.
