The No. 6-ranked College of Charleston sailing team placed third for the women and fifth for the coed team over the weekend at the Atlantic Coast Championship.
The Cougars hosted the coed competition from the J. Stewart Walker Center on the Charleston Harbor, while Cornell hosted the women’s regatta on Lake Cayuga in New York.
On the women’s side, Charleston scored 144 points over the two divisions at the 18-team regatta. Charleston was edged by champion Dartmouth (112 points) and runner-up Boston College (120).
Junior skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and senior crew Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.) sailed to a fourth-place finish in A-Division while senior skipper Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) sailed with the help of junior Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) and sophomore Charlotte Saxe (Wilton, Conn.) to a second-place finish in B-Division.
In the coed competition, the team scored 237 over 14 races, which put it in a tie for fourth with Dartmouth in the 18-team regatta. However, Dartmouth held the advantage in A-Division scoring, which gave them the nod over the Cougars.
Sophomore skipper Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) and junior crew Alicia Blumenthal sailed to a 14th-place finish in A-Division while the sophomore duo of skipper Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.) came up big for CofC with a second-place finish in B-Division.
The Cougars will be back in action this weekend starting on Friday at the ICSA Sloop Nationals in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Senior Darcy Dorton was named the CAA volleyball offensive player of the week. The award is the fourth weekly honor for the outside hitter, the second-most in the conference. She had 43 kills, 26 digs and hit .410 in two matches.
The Cougars (23-5, 13-1) are the top seed and host the CAA tournament Friday-Sunday at the North Charleston Convention Center.
