Northwood Academy’s defense has to be glad to see the last of Gordon Washington.

On Friday, the Chargers, for the second time this season, saw much more of Washington than they could handle.

Florence Christian’s senior tailback ran roughshod over Northwood, leading the Eagles to a 48-20 win and securing a trip to the SCISA AA state championship game at noon next Saturday against Hilton Head Christian. The game will be played at Benedict College in Columbia.

On Friday, Washington racked up 280 yards rushing and five touchdowns, with all of the scores coming in the first half as the Eagles (11-1) raced to a 34-0 lead at halftime.

Of course, shredding Northwood’s defense is nothing new for Washington. When the teams met back in September, he plowed through the Chargers for 326 yards and four touchdowns in Florence Christian’s 50-17 victory.

“Our coaches told us they had gotten better, and I kind of took that as a challenge,” Gordon said. “I talked to the team and said, ‘All right, if they got better, we know we got better, so we need to go out and pound them from start to finish.’ Sure enough, that’s what we did.”

With Florence Christian’s offensive line keeping true to form and opening wide holes as it has all season, Washington sandwiched three short TD runs between a pair of 24-yard scoring runs, the last of which came with 41 seconds left in the half and made it 34-0. He had 229 yards rushing in the first two quarters.

“Gordon just ran hard and does what he does,” FCS coach Neil Minton said.

Florence Christian’s defense was just as dominant on its side of the ball. The Chargers finished with 279 yards, with 200 coming in the second half, much of that after the Eagles had taken their starters out. Northwood quarterback Will Lloyd finished 18-of-34 passing with 240 yards.

“The defense was unbelievable,” Minton said. “They were very disciplined, physical, laid some good hits and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The Chargers (8-4) finally scored with 1:12 left in the third on a 15-yard pass from Lloyd to Micah Loudin.
