UNION — A Jonesville man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the death of an infant he was babysitting nearly two years ago.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported 26-year-old Lashawn Brannon was sentenced in Union on Wednesday for the death of 9-month-old Talayna Renwick.

Brannon had entered an Alford plea to attempted murder charges in August. An Alford plea does not admit guilty, but concedes there is enough evidence for a conviction.

Talayna was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital with brain trauma and other injuries Dec. 14, 2011. She died two days later.

Prosecutor John Anthony said prosecutors accepted the plea because they did not want to risk Brannon being found not guilty.

Defense attorney Erik Delaney says Brannon said Talayna’s injuries were an accident.
