A man was fatally shot in the dugout of a park on America Street while children were at swimming practice at a nearby pool Tuesday afternoon.
The man was shot about 3:50 p.m. at Martin Park, police spokesman Charles Francis said. The man died at a hospital not long afterward, Francis said.
Witnesses who were at Martin Luther King Jr. Pool said children were in the water when they heard several gunshots. Coaches ushered the children into the locker room. Parents got a notice from the city that the park was closed because of the shooting.
Police taped off the crime scene and parked cruisers with flashing blue lights around King and Line streets. Officers were interviewing a person of interest not long after the shooting, Francis said.
Police did not immediately say where the victim was shot or how many times. His identity was not immediately released.
