A 21-year-old North Charleston man is one of two South Carolina suspects being held in connection with the July fatal shooting of a University of Michigan medical school student, authorities said.
North Charleston police received a tip last week that suspect Shaquille Alexander Jones was in the area. He is wanted by investigators in Ann Arbor, Mich., on a murder charge, according to a police report.
On Nov. 5 police found Jones at an apartment on Elms Plantation Boulevard and took him into custody. During a search of the apartment, officers found two loaded pistols in a duffle bag belonging to Jones, a police report stated.
Jones is being held at the Charleston County jail on a fugitive warrant and two counts of possessing a stolen pistol, authorities said.
Ann Arbor police on Thursday announced the arrests of three people in the slaying of student Paul DeWolf, including a 21-year-old in North Charleston man, but police there have not named those suspects. South Carolina authorities confirmed Monday that Jones is being held in connection with DeWolf’s killing.
The (Sumter) Item has reported that a second suspect in the case is Joei Alexander Jordan, 20, of Sumter. Jail records show Jordan is being held as a fugitive from justice at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center pending an extradition hearing.
DeWolf, 25, was found fatally shot at Michigan’s off-campus Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity July 24 after failing to appear for work at a hospital. He was attending medical school on an Air Force scholarship and held the rank of second lieutenant.
Media reports on the arrest indicate that investigators found an Ann Arbor taxicab business card and a University of Michigan cup in Jordan’s home.
Ann Arbor police said the suspects had no previous connection to DeWolf.
Court records show no previous arrests for Jones in Charleston County, and a criminal background check through the State Law Enforcement Division produced no results. Sumter court records indicate nothing but a traffic infraction for Jordan.
