West Ashley completed its first winning season in school history Friday night with a 38-7 victory over Cane Bay to finish with a 6-5 record.

The Cobras, on the other hand, ended their year winless at 0-11. West Ashley finished the regular season 6-5 two years ago, but lost a playoff game to end up with a 6-6 record.

The Wildcats failed to qualify for the playoffs this year, but West Ashley coach Bobby Marion was pleased with the way his team finished.

“I am a little disappointed because it looks like we are not going to make the playoffs,” Marion said. “But I am proud of what we accomplished.”

The Wildcats took a 14-0 lead in the first half, scoring on a 45-yard interception return by Reginald Coardes and then a 10-yard run by Cameron Byas.

Malik Thompkins returned the second-half kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown and the rout was on. Wildcat quarterback Pedro Manigault scored twice on runs of 1 and 25 yards in the third quarter.

West Ashley’s Caroline Cashion completed the scoring with a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Manigault had with 170 yards on 18 carries. For the year, he finished with 1,073 yards rushing. “He had a great night,” Marion said of his quarterback. “They loaded up in the box, so our counters and bootlegs were effective. Pedro’s best football is still ahead of him.”

Cane Bay quarterback Devin Kilgore connected with Gerald Baker for a 13-yard TD pass to give the Cobras their lone touchdown.
