A 35-year-old man from South Carolina died at a local hospital after becoming ill near the finish line of the third annual Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon, Savannah-Chatham County police said today.

The man’s name was being withheld pending notification of his family, police spokesman Julian Miller said.

Organizers say 14,700 runners from across the U.S. were at the starting line Saturday morning for the main 26.2-mile road race and a half marathon.

The men’s full-marathon winner was 23-year-old Eric McDonald of Groveland, Mass., with a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 47 seconds. The women’s winner was 23-year-old Alyssa Kulik of Columbia, S.C. Her time was two hours, 53 minutes and nine seconds.
