WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A former Wilmington police officer has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor following a botched prostitution sting operation last year.
Cpl. Andy Lazzaro pleaded to willful failure to discharge his duties Wednesday in New Hanover County District Court.
Assistant District Attorney Barrett Temple says Lazzaro played the part of a bachelor in a sting operation aimed at uncovering an online escort business. Prosecutors said that Lazzaro got drunk when he and four other undercover officers operated the sting under the guise of a bachelor party in a rented recreational vehicle.
Lazzaro was ordered to perform 24 hours of community service, fined $100 and given a year of unsupervised probation.
