The word “magical” often has been connected with the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, but this year may mark the first time the annual culinary extravaganza has associated itself with magical realism.
Local artist Lisa Shimko’s design for the official 2014 festival poster features a gape-mouthed snapper; a wine-filled Mason jar and assorted produce, including an okra slice with a halo floating above it, set against a Lowcountry sky.
“I wanted to see the city with new eyes — what could be a metaphor or symbol of Charleston?” Shimko, a Pennsylvania native who has lived here since 2000, said in a news release.
In previous years, the festival solicited public submissions for a poster contest, but Shimko was specifically commissioned for the assignment.
Festival spokeswoman Ashley Zink said creative director Zach Norris worked with Shimko “to narrow the direction of the piece and ensure it would be different from artwork used in previous festival posters.”
Shimko’s design will be featured on the festival’s ticket brochure, program and website.
The festival will be held March 6-9.
