Murray’s meat market expands after 41 years in Charleston
Murray’s Links and Sausages is expanding for the first time after 41 years in business in Charleston.
The meat market at 1667 Meeting Street Road will add a second location on the Cainhoy peninsula at 2500 E. Clements Ferry Road.
Owner Ernest Murray said the expansion will help him better serve the customers who travel from the Huger and Cainhoy areas to shop his meat selection.
“They offered me a spot over there and I accepted. I’m working as hard as I can to get it open,” Murray said.
He expects to have the new shop open by Thanksgiving.
Murray has made a name for himself with his variety of meats and specialty sausage links. such as the “blacktalian sausage,” a creative spin on the Italian-style link.
“It’s my own formula for making the sausage, and I’m black, so that’s the ‘blacktalian,’ ” he said. “The first time I did it, the formula came out dark, so that’s where it got its name, too.”
Murray’s first meat market started in 1972 at Smith and Cannon streets.
Four years later, the business moved to 614 Rutledge Ave., where it operated until moving to North Charleston in 2002.
Another longtime Charleston business has expanded to Mount Pleasant. Elizabeth Stuart Designs held a grand opening of its second location Wednesday at 215 Coleman Blvd. near Shem Creek. The space formerly was occupied by Aubergine Home Collection.
ESD, a furniture and design boutique, has been in West Ashley at 422 Savannah Highway for more than a decade, and before that its store was on Upper King Street.
Southside 17 Bar & Grill is preparing to open a second restaurant in North Charleston.
The restaurant that serves the Johns Island and West Ashley communities at 3632 Savannah Highway plans to open the new spot in the Centre Pointe shopping center near the Tanger Outlets by Nov. 12.
Mudd Pie merger
Mudd Pie Girl Bakery has merged with How Art Thou Cafe on James Island.
Though bakery owner Tina Russo Kinney has sold her goods at the cafe for several months, Mudd Pie Girl will have its own space within the restaurant at 1956 Maybank Highway in Terrace Plaza.
Russo Kinney specializes in scones, pastries and pies. She’s currently accepting special orders for the holiday season.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held to celebrate the merger at 10 a.m. Friday. Free baked goods will be served.
Blue Heron Acupuncture, a holistic medicine clinic, is opening on Upper King Street. The clinic at 680-A King St. will hold a grand opening 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday. Events scheduled throughout the day include meditation classes, lectures on Chinese medicine, mini massages and an art show featuring work by local artist Lisa Shimko.
