SUMMERVILLE — The Summerville Green Wave moved one game closer to a region championship after outscoring the Ashley Ridge Swamp Foxes, 39-33, Friday night.
Summerville (8-2, 4-0 in Region 8-AAAA) can claim the league title with a victory next week at Bluffton.
“We scored 39 points but we never slowed them down,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “Our defense didn’t play good, so I just feel fortunate that we won.”
The Swamp Foxes (4-6, 2-2) are hoping to secure a spot in the playoffs with a win over Fort Dorchester next week.
“Both these offenses have a lot of playmakers so we felt like it might be a bit of a track meet,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “I think we matched Summerville physically, and our kids played with effort and that is all I ask of them. I’m disappointed with the loss, but I’m not disappointed with their effort.”
A field goal by Summerville’s David Kennedy, who was recently selected for the North-South All-Star Game, was the major difference in the first half.
Summerville linebacker Codie Soto made an interception deep in Green Wave territory and returned it to the Swamp Fox 16-yard line before Sean White tackled him to save a touchdown with eight seconds remaining in the second quarter. Then Kennedy nailed a 33-yard field goal to give Summerville a 24-21 lead entering the half.
The Green Wave also had two touchdown runs from sophomore Chris Felder in the half and a 15-yard TD catch from Donnell Bryan.
Ashley Ridge scored its first-half points on two Tyler Garland runs and a 99-yard kickoff return by Donavan Thompson.
Summerville cushioned its lead in the third quarter with a safety and a 43-yard touchdown pass from Sawyer Bridges to Johnston McCurry for a 32-21 lead entering the final quarter.
The Swamp Foxes scored on a pair of TD catches by Dashaun Santiago to keep hope alive.
However, following Santiago’s second score, Summerville chewed up the final 2:21 with a drive.
