Summerville man’s shooting death a mystery
A Summerville man was found shot to death in a wooded area of Bamberg County last week, and investigators are trying to figure out how he died.
Thomas Eugean Hancock, 57, of Trolley Road, was found dead near his truck in a wooded area of Branchville shortly before 5 p.m. on Oct. 24, according to an incident report from the Bamberg County Sheriff’s Office.
Hancock died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the coroner’s office. It’s not clear how he was shot, and the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating, Bamberg County Chief Deputy Ben Hay said Wednesday.
Hancock’s body was lying near his 1997 Dodge pickup truck in a field about 300 feet off Edisto River Road, according to the report. A shotgun was lying in the grass near the body.
The truck had a flat rear right tire. A jack was under the truck, as if Hancock was getting ready to change the tire.
Coins were in the grass near the body, and two one-dollar bills were on the ground about 75 feet away. A wallet was found in a nearby tobacco barn.
