LEXINGTON, S.C. -- A Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputy has shot and killed a Lexington man at a home where gunshots had been reported.
Officers were called to the home around 1 p.m. Monday. One of the officers entered the home and found a man pointing a gun at him and threatening him.
The officer fired, and the suspect later died.
The man who was shot has been identified as 71-year-old Wilmon L. Hutto. Hutto retired as a fire chief in Lexington County in 2003.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting. Thirty-three-year-old Deputy Billy Womble has been placed on administrative leave while the case is investigated. Womble has been a deputy since 2001.
