DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities have identified the body that was found in the ceiling of an abandoned store in Durham earlier this month.

Authorities say the body found in an air conditioning vent on the roof of a recently closed convenience store was that of 48-year-old Kenneth Avery Smith.

Police have not yet said how Smith died or how long his body had been there.

An insurance adjuster found Smith’s body Oct. 16.

Police say Smith lived less than a quarter mile from the store with his brother.

The state medical examiner’s office used Smith’s dental records from the Veteran’s Administration to identify him.

Smith had been reported missing Sept. 7. He was a graduate of North Carolina A&T and served in the Marines from 1988 to 1995.
