Anthony E. Middleton, 51, of Wye Lane in Charleston, a Charleston County jail officer, was charged with first-offense driving under the influence Sunday.

A Charleston County detention center officer was arrested on a DUI charge early Sunday morning.

Anthony E. Middleton, 51, of Wye Lane in Charleston was charged with first-offense driving under the influence.

About 3 a.m. Sunday, a Charleston County Sheriff’s deputy observed Middleton’s vehicle traveling on I-26 west failing to maintain a traffic lane, Maj. Jim Brady said. The deputy noted an odor of consumed alcohol, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, and Middleton failed field-sobriety tests, Brady said.

Middleton, an officer at the Al Cannon Detention Center, was placed on unpaid administrative leave pending an investigation, Brady said. Middleton was booked into the jail Sunday morning and released.
