The public in invited to “One Big Gathering Under the Tree,” a celebration in honor of the Angel Oak tree.

A fellowship dinner is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. Nov. 3 and is organized by the Lowcountry Open Land Trust and various Johns Island congregations, schools and civic organizations.

The goal is to honor the tree’s legacy as a place of spirituality, cultural history and unity. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish or a dessert to share. Admission is free.

The event is part of the Preserve Angel Oak campaign launched in July to secure 17 acres of rural land adjacent to the ancient live oak tree.

So far, nearly 10,000 individuals worldwide have donated funds to the campaign, according to a statement from organizers.

Supportive private enterprises include Blackbaud and Piggly Wiggly along with nonprofits, including the Historic Charleston Foundation.

The fellowship event will feature art of the Angel Oak created by students from Haut Gap Middle, Charleston Collegiate, Angel Oak Elementary, Frierson and Mount Zion schools. Parking will be available at St. John’s Episcopal Church and Haut Gap schools.

Guests are encouraged to upload existing photos or those taken during the fellowship dinner and post them on Instagram using #PreserveAngelOak.
