Coroner identifies woman killed in wreck on I-26

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has identified a woman who was killed Friday in a wreck on Interstate 26.

Mary Ann Rice, 68, of Tennessee, died from blunt force trauma to her body, Coroner Bill Salisbury said.

The wreck occurred about 1:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-26 near exit 199 for North Main Street in Summerville.

S.C. Highway Patrol said a 2012 GMC sport utility vehicle went off the left side of the road into the median, where it struck several trees.

The driver, who is from Tennessee, was transported by air to the Medical University Hospital. Rice, a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, Salisbury said.

Both Rice and the driver were wearing seat belts.
