Campbell’s two goals in final minute lift Stingrays past Greenville, 2-1
GREENVILLE — Forward Scott Campbell scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the final minute of regulation to give the South Carolina Stingrays a 2-1 victory over the Greenville Road Warriors on Friday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis earned his second victory of the season, making 24 saves for the Stingrays (2-0-0-1).
The Stingrays and Road Warriors (2-1-0-0) skated a scoreless two periods of action with sharp play from both goaltenders. Jakaitis kept the Road Warriors off the scoreboard with 17 saves through 40 minutes, including stops on two 2-on-1 breaks and denied forward J.M. Rizk all alone on top of the crease midway through the contest. Netminder Connor Knapp (36 saves on 38 shots) backstopped the Road Warriors, including 44 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play in the opening frame.
Road Warriors forward Andrew Carroll scored on the power play 5:33 into the third period with help from forwards Josh Nicholls and Brandon Hynes.
In the final minute of action, the Stingrays pulled Jakaitis pulled for the extra skater. Campbell tied the contest 1 at the 19:30 mark, knocking in a rebound off a Scooter Vaughan shot from the point.
South Carolina won the ensuing faceoff and dumped the puck behind Knapp to set up Campbell with 4.9 seconds remaining for the game-winning score. Forwards Jordan Owens and Igor Gongalsky picked up the assists. The Stingrays finished the game 0 for 5 on the power play, while the Road Warriors went 1 for 2.
South Carolina’s home opener is 7:05 p.m. Saturday in a rematch with Greenville on a night that features the Stingrays Alumni Game, Zooperstars!, 2013-14 schedule giveaway and free parking at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Hall of Fame players such as Jason Fitzsimmons, Dave Seitz, Brett Marietti, Rick Vaive, Rob Concannon and Matt Scherer, along with fan favorites Johann Kroll, Trevor Johnson and more will take part in the pregame Alumni Game at 2 p.m. Admissions is free with purchase of an opening-night ticket.
The world-famous Zooperstars! perform during the intermissions, and the first 5,000 fans receive a 2013-14 magnet schedule.
