KIAWAH ISLAND -- Flames were coming through the roof when firefighters first arrived at a house on Kiawah Island early Friday morning.
About 1:30 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a house on Rhetss Bluff Road, according to a news release from Battalion Chief James Ghi of the St. John’s Fire District.
The first officers reported fire showing from the roof and from the rear of the house, Ghi said. Once firefighters had determined that the residents had successfully evacuated, they attacked the fire from the home’s exterior.
The Charleston Fire Department, Charleston County EMS, the Sheriff’s Office and Kiawah Security also responded, Ghi said.
Fire department units were expected to remain on the scene, extinguishing hot spots and conducting overhaul.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
