Charleston County sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl and showing pornography to her brother.
Emmett Roger Craven, 47, of Woodland Shores Road in Charleston, is charged with two counts of criminal solicitation of a minor, one count of first-degree assault and battery, and one county of dissemination of obscene material to a minor.
Sheriff’s deputies started investigating Craven after receiving a complaint from the girl’s father on Oct. 6, Sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said.
The father told deputies that he wasn’t worried about her immediate safety because Craven was being held at a mental facility, an incident report states.
Craven was a family friend and often cared for the victim and her brother, deputies said.
According to the report, Craven is accused of assaulting the now 17-year-old girl on multiple occasions, beginning when she was 14.
A detective, in an arrest affidavit, wrote that Craven showed the girl a sex toy and offered to buy one for her that he could keep at his home.
The affidavits state that Craven also grabbed the girl’s breasts and slapped her on the buttocks during a trip to the beach.
The girl’s brother reported that Craven showed him obscene videos while Craven was supposed to be babysitting. Craven also offered to teach the boy how to have sex, affidavits state.
Craven is being held at the Charleston County jail in lieu of a $150,000 bail.
