NBC cancels ‘Ironside,’ ‘Welcome to the Family’
LOS ANGELES — NBC says it’s canceling two freshmen shows, “Ironside” and “Welcome to the Family.”
“Ironside,” starring Blair Underwood in an updated version of the Raymond Burr police drama, will air its final episode tonight. Burr’s “Ironside” aired from 1967-75, but low ratings will keep the new series to a total of four episodes.
“Welcome to the Family,” a Thursday night comedy about a young couple’s unplanned pregnancy, won’t have a chance to say goodbye. Its last airing was this week.
Breslin to be honored at Savannah festival
SAVANNAH — Organizers of the Savannah Film Festival say teen actress Abigail Breslin will be honored with a Discovery Award during the closing night of the event.
Officials say Breslin will be presented with the award Nov. 2 before the screening of the film “August: Osage County.” The film is based on a 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tracy Letts, and features Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Ewan McGregor.
Hugh Laurie to lend talent for fundraiser
NEW ORLEANS — Hugh Laurie has lots of titles on his resume: award-winning actor, comedian, writer, director, musician and, perhaps most importantly here, devotee of music icon Professor Longhair.
Next month, Laurie will perform at an all-star fundraiser at Tipitina’s to benefit the ongoing campaign to restore the family home of one of Laurie’s musical idols, Professor Longhair.
WWL-TV reports the “Fess Fest” musical fundraiser on Nov. 7 is being organized by the Tipitina’s Foundation, which has spent the past several years to rehab Professor Longhair’s Uptown home.
