Fort Dorchester defeats Colleton County, 56-14

The last time a high school quarterback with the last name Garrett was carving up defenses in Walterboro, it was Gianni Garrett, quarterback of the now defunct Walterboro High School, back in the early 1990s.

Kobe Garrett carried on his father’s tradition Friday, except he did it in a rival’s uniform, running for 132 yards and a touchdown and throwing for 82 yards and two more scores to help Fort Dorchester dismantle Colleton County, 56-14.

The win moves the Patriots (5-3) to 1-1 in Region 8-AAAA play after a mistake-filled loss to Summerville last week in its region opener. Colleton County fell to 2-6, 0-2.

Fort Dorchester’s three losses prior to its win over the Cougars on Friday had come against arguably the three best teams in the Lowcountry — Goose Creek, Stratford and Summerville, which are a combined 22-2 after all three won again this week.

“It’s been tough on us,” said Fort Dorchester coach Steve Laprad. “We’ve lost some close games against some good teams this year where we had a chance to win, but we didn’t.

“We’ve got to get better, and I think tonight’s win was a step in the right direction. We did a good job tonight. We played well, and I’m very proud of the kids.”

Garrett scored the game’s first TD with 4:45 to go in the first, selling the handoff for what seemed like an eternity on an option-read play before yanking the ball back from tailback Matt Murray and dashing 31 yards to the end zone.

Corey Rawlings hooked the PAT left, leaving the score at 6-0, but Fort Dorchester had found its rhythm, and began pouring on the offense, scoring on four of its next five possessions in the first half.

Nahshon Cyrus ran in a TD from 34 yards out on the Patriots’ next drive. Garrett passed to Bailey for a 6-yard TD to make it 21-0, and on the next drive connected with Rawlings for a 52-yarder that made it 28-0.
