North Augusta women plead to Social Security fraud
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Federal prosecutors say two North Augusta women have pleaded guilty to fraud for receiving Social Security benefits by claiming they were blind.
U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says both women had valid driver’s licenses and had been cited for traffic violations.
Nettles says 38-year-old Rita Marie Sherlock and 42-year-old Mary Teresa Sherlock obtained nearly $200,000 in Social Security disability payments since the mid-1990s.
The women pleaded guilty to theft of government funds. Each woman was sentenced to five months in prison, five months of house arrest and were ordered to repay the money.
Rita Sherlock must pay the Social Security Administration $100,000. Mary Sherlock must pay nearly $92,000.
