After eight years serving its French fare in downtown Charleston, La Fourchette is closing its doors on 432 King St. this week. The space has been sold to Hall Hospitality Group, which owns Halls Chophouse and Rita’s Seaside Grille and hasn’t announced its plans for the new acquisition.

Perig Goulet, chef and owner of La Fourchette, said he’s taking a hiatus from the restaurant scene, but Charleston hasn’t seen the last of him.

“This is a nice opportunity for me to explore my ideas about Charleston dining, especially for the locals who have been so kind to me,” he said. “I will be back. Bonsoir y’all.”

In La Fourchette’s absence, diners can get a taste of the French bistro’s style when Egan & Sons opens in a few weeks in the building that formerly housed Moes Downtown Tavern at 5 Cumberland St.

Owner Christopher Egan hired former La Fourchette chef Kyle Yarborough as executive chef of the Irish restaurant and pub.

“I thought the rustic bistro cooking Kyle has done would go very well with our idea of straight-from-the farmhouse, country Irish food,” Egan said. “I’ve let him run with his creative side, and I think it’s a good fit.”

Egan and his family own two other Egan & Sons restaurants around his home town of Montclair, N.J. He said he remodeled the former Moe’s to highlight its rustic character.

“It’s definitely going to be a fun place to meet, eat and drink,” he said.

A specific opening date hasn’t been nailed down, but Egan said he hopes to open in about two weeks.
