Surge of development triggers expansion for N. Charleston’s HD Supply
As Piggly Wiggly dismantles its enterprise in the Charleston area, one company has found an opportunity for growth in one of its former warehouse spaces.
HD Supply Power Solutions has moved its North Charleston branch from 4510 Dorchester Road to one of Piggly Wiggly’s previous storage facilities at 4567 Piggly Wiggly Drive.
The larger 20,000-square-foot warehouse will help HD Supply accommodate the increasing demand it’s been seeing in the Charleston market recently.
One of the largest industrial distributors in North America, the Atlanta-based company serves electrical, utilities and maintenance industries in 650 cities, including Myrtle Beach, Columbia and North Charleston. It formerly was a wholesale division of retail giant Home Depot, which remains one of its largest customers.
HD Supply has distributed electrical products in North Charleston since the mid-1980s. Many of its clients are contractors, and the recent proliferation of development in Charleston has fueled a jump in its business.
“We always evaluate the growth of the markets we serve, and we thought this location and this city was the perfect place to invest in,” said Steve Margolius, president. “We want to participate in and support the growth of this community.”
Margolius and North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the warehouse on Thursday. Summey reassured the company’s executives that the new location will continue to be an asset to HD Supply.
“I think we’ve seen the last of the recession,” he said. “Having a company like this coming into North Charleston and being so centrally located, is a service market for the growth that we have going on.”
