The Rev. Leon Winn of Sumter announced Tuesday he will run for the Sixth Congressional seat held for more than two decades by Democratic Rep. James Clyburn.

Winn, a pastor and U.S. Air Force veteran, was scheduled to kick off his campaign at four locations across the district, which stretches from Columbia to Sumter to Charleston.

“The only way to bring about change in our country is to change the people we are electing to Congress,” he said in a statement. “The hard working folks of the Sixth District deserve someone who will work every day to better their lives and break the gridlock in Washington.”

Last fall, Winn ran as a Republican for the state Senate District 36 seat vacated by longtime Democratic Sen. John Land. He got 28 percent of the vote in a race won by Democrat Kevin L Johnson.

The sixth district is heavily Democratic, and Clyburn won re-election with almost 94 percent of the vote last fall against a Green party challenger.
