GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A dog who rescued his owners by barking during a fire has been reunited with his family and is recovering from burns.

The Gainesville Sun reports that Onyx was treated at the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital following the Sept. 26 fire in Tallahassee.

Because the family didn’t have the money for Onyx’ treatment, staff at the Northwood Animal Hospital in Tallahassee started a Facebook campaign to raise money. He suffered burns to his ears, skin and eyes and still needs treatment.

Onyx, a nine-month-old pit bull, barked and woke his owners during the blaze. Trevor Myres found his dog on fire and extinguished the flames with a garden hose.

This week, Myers picked Onyx up from the Gainesville animal hospital and called him a hero.
