The Roper St. Francis Ryan White Program hosted its 5th annual AIDS Walk and Red Ribbon 5K this morning at Hampton Park in Charleston.
About 200 runners and walkers gathered at the annual fund-raising event near the gazebo at Cleveland Street and Mary Murray Drive. Attendees partook in face painting, jump castles, and browsed booths from a number of vendors. HIV/AIDS testing was also available.
While much progress is being made to combat HIV/AIDS, South Carolina ranks eighth nationally in the number of reported AIDS cases. Last year, more than 2,300 cases of HIV/AIDs were reported in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.
The Ryan White Program at the hospital provided comprehensive medical care to 610 patients in 2012, and the program enrolls approximately 100 new patients annually.
Today’s event will continue until about noon.
