Bull Street Gourmet expanding to Charleston’s Midtown area
Bull Street Gourmet & Market has found a new spot on the peninsula to call home. The locally owned deli announced a new storefront in Elan Midtown, a luxury apartment complex under construction at 441 Meeting St.
The deli closed its original location at Bull and Smith Streets in June, after serving creative salads and sandwiches in Harleston Village for six years. The restaurant has since shifted the business to its second location at 120 King St., which will carry on when the Elan shop opens.
“We are excited about the Elan Midtown location because we feel our concept fits with the neighborhood and the overall development of the area,” said Justin Croxall, owner and chef. “This also allows us to serve a customer base that we lost with the closing of our Bull Street location.”
Longtime restaurateur Steve Carroll seemed to have found his footing in the Charleston market with late-night bars such as Red’s Ice House and The Warehouse, but he’s tapping into a new niche with the family-friendly Water Dog Grill, which is opening in Mount Pleasant this week.
The sports bar and grill at 1035 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. will host a grand opening at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
While it’s billed as a place to bring the kids, Water Dog Grill doesn’t stray far from Carroll’s flair for a good time. The restaurant features a 24-tap beer selection, two stages and more than 20 TV’s.
The namesake stems from favorite pastimes for the Mount Pleasant native: fishing and boating.
“So many of us that live in the Lowcountry are water dogs,” he said. “It’s not just a name. It’s a mentality.”
Raul Salazar, owner of Mount Pleasant Mexican restaurant Rio Grande, is opening another eatery in The Market at Cane Bay in Summerville. Though the cuisine will be similar to Rio Grande, his new venture at 1724 State Road will be called Rico Chico. He plans to open in mid-December.
The Charleston Crab House building in Mount Pleasant that went dark last March will see new light next month when it reopens as SOL Southwest Kitchen and Tequila Bar. The restaurant at 1101 Stockade Lane is undergoing renovations to add a spacious dining room and a patio with an outdoor bar serving 16 beers on tap, specialty cocktails and more than 60 tequilas.
A statement from owners David Clark, Andy Palmer and Joe Sciortino said: “SOL will have a hip and sophisticated atmosphere that is casual, family-friendly and fun.” The menu will feature Southwest cuisine with some locally sourced ingredients.
Patrick and Fanny Panella, owners of Bin 152, are starting Chez Nous, a small bistro in downtown Charleston’s Elliotborough, and they hope to be open in December. The small restaurant on 6 Payne Court will center on fare from southern France, northern Italy and northern Spain.
“It’s from a little region where my wife grew up, where there’s a lot of borrowing of cuisine,” Patrick Panella said.
Chez Nous’ menu of two appetizers, entrees and desserts will change daily, he said.
An Italian dessert cafe, Carmella’s, is going next to the Customs House at 198 East Bay St. Owner Brian Solari plans to renovate the 1,700 square-feet space that was recently used as a business office, and hopes to open by early 2014. The cafe will focus on Italian sweets, coffees and wines.
