One of 22 stores Bi-Lo is buying from Piggly Wiggly is closing

One of the 22 stores Bi-Lo bought from Piggly Wiggly is closing.

Friday is the last day for the store at 4360 Augusta Road in Lexington near Columbia.

A store employee said there are other Bi-Lo supermarkets nearby, which contributed to the store’s closing.

Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers Inc. is paying $35 million to Charleston-based Piggly Wiggly Carolina for 16 stores in South Carolina and six in coastal Georgia.

Southeastern Grocers is the newly formed parent company of Bi-Lo and Winn Dixie, which merged two years ago.

Piggly Wiggly is also selling seven stores in the Charleston area to Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter. Those stores will begin closing this weekend and over the next week or so for the changeover to the new brand.
