A foreign trade expert is scheduled to speak about free trade with Latin America during a presentation at College of Charleston this afternoon.

Surse Pierpoint, general manager of Colon Import and Export, will address free trade, liberty and business leadership in Latin America during his speech at 1:40 p.m. at the college.

Latin America has been growing as a key import and export destination for some South Carolina manufacturers.

Earlier this summer, the S.C. State Ports Authority announced BMW plans to ship 1,000 SUVs to South America. The SUVs, which are made at the German automaker’s Greer plant, will be placed in containers and shipped from SPA’s Wando Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant, officials have said.

In April, Grieg Star Shipping announced a new monthly service added to Port of Charleston. The service is largely for steel and wood product imports from Brazil, officials have said.
