You’ve, no doubt, heard of the “Game of the Century.”
It’s that huge game that happens just about every other week featuring teams with fancy records and fanatical fans. The game usually turns out to be a snoozer.
Well, this week we have the “Schedule of the Century” as ABC News 4 anchor Dean Stephens and The Post and Courier’s Phil Bowman pick the top six games in the Lowcountry. Two games, Goose Creek vs. Beaufort and Hanahan vs. Orangeburg-Wilkinson, feature teams with perfect records. Once-beaten Summerville travels to undefeated Stratford in another big game.
That’s a lot of excellence.
Speaking of excellence, Stephens was 5-1 last week while Bowman limped home at 4-2
Here are this week’s picks:
Berkeley at James Island
Stephens: I liked the Stags against Timberland last week, but it’s put up or shut up time with the start of region play. Don’t be fooled by their 1-4 record, take the Trojans, 21-17.
Bowman: Stags gaining speed and strength in Region 8-AAA play. Berkeley, 28-14.
Summerville at Stratford
Stephens: Two of the state’s top coaches, but only one was born on the same day as my oldest son. Stratford takes care of business, 31-14.
Bowman: Great coaches, great players, great game. Stratford 20-17.
Fort Dorchester at West Ashley
Stephens: You are one picky picker, last week you liked West Ashley against Summerville, you jumped off the bandwagon too early. Take the home team, 21-20.
Bowman: Then I saw them play, now I am a believer. Fort Dorchester, 17-7.
Hanahan at Orangeburg-Wilkinson
Stephens: Athletes all over the field. I’ll stick with my home-field advantage theory. O-W wins, 28-24.
Bowman: Hanahan will go undefeated in the regular season. Hawks, 35-29.
Goose Creek at Beaufort
Stephens: Dutch Fork couldn’t stop the Gators’ attack. Neither can Beaufort. Forget what I said about home-field advantage. The Gators win, 41-14.
Bowman: “Ground Chuck” offense chews up more yards. Goose Creek, 35-21.
Battery Creek at Bishop England
Stephens: Sounds like a country music group, but Shiver and the Fosberry Boys lead the way, BE wins 24-14.
Bowman: Bishops have 29 wins in last 33 games. Make that 30 of last 34. BE, 20-10.
