Dorchester deputies get warrants for suspect in theft of Folly Beach police officer’s gun
Dorchester County investigators are searching for a homeless man wanted in connection with the theft of a Folly Beach police officer’s service pistol from her Summerville home.
David Ryan Shelton, 25, is wanted on charges of larceny and possession of a stolen pistol, Sheriff’s Capt. Tony Phinney said.
Investigators have not yet located Officer Tiffany Britton’s gun, which she noticed missing from her Judith Drive home on Sept. 8, authorities said.
Britton, 26, told deputies that when she went to clean the gun, she discovered that her .40-caliber pistol had been stolen, along with her duty belt, which contained handcuffs, pepper spray, asp baton and ammunition, according to a police report.
Britton told deputies that she had allowed Shelton, a long-time friend, to stay the night at her home on Sept. 4 because he was hungry and had just completed drug treatment, the report stated. When she woke up, he was gone. Four days later, she noticed the gun was missing as well, deputies said.
The duty belt turned up at Shelton’s mother’s home in Ladson, but the gun and the ammunition weren’t there, authorities said.
Anyone with information on Shelton or the missing gun can call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
