Patience and a steady putter helped Colleen Estes capture the 2013 Charleston Ladies City Amateur golf tournament played at Municipal Golf Course.
Estes, a former East Carolina golfer who now works for The Golf Channel and GolfNow, a tee times booking branch of The Golf Channel, shot a 4-over-par 76 Saturday and earned a five-shot victory over 2009 Ladies City Amateur winner Victoria Tsurutis. Estes finished the 36-hole tournament at 6-over 150.
Sandy Bland won the Seniors title with a 78-81—159, four strokes better than runner-up Terry Rickson.
“This was so fun. It is the perfect time of the year,” said Estes, who moved to Mount Pleasant a year ago. “It was a ton of fun. The tournament was very well done.”
Estes entered Saturday’s round one shot ahead of Tsurutis but picked up three more shots with a 40 on the front nine. Tsurutis picked up two shots with a birdie on the 10th hole, but Estes got those two strokes back with a birdie of her own on the 11th and managed to finish the back nine in even-par 36.
“My putting,” Estes said when asked if there was a key. “Even though the greens were tough, I made some good up and downs. I had to go out and play my game. I know my strengths and weaknesses. I just had to be patient.”
Estes, 25, was a four-year player at East Carolina. She said she is able to “get out on weekends here and there.” Her last tournament was the qualifying event for the U.S. Women’s Amateur where she missed out by one shot.
