Motorcyclist killed in Summerville wreck identified

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal motorcycle wreck in Summerville Friday morning.

The wreck happened shortly before 7 a.m. on Trolley Road in front of the Irongate subdivision, troopers report.

Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins said a sport utility vehicle attempted to make a left turn into the subdivision, but struck a Harley Davidson motorcycle that was traveling south on Trolley Road.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said the motorcyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet and was killed in the incident.

Nisbet identified the man as 59-year-old Ronald Wayne Stewart, of Manchester Road in Summerville.

Stewart was on his way to work when the wreck occurred, according to Nisbet. The wreckage was about one mile away from the man’s job, he said.

Stewart died from massive head trauma and multiple extremity fractures, Nisbet said.

Parts of Trolley Road were blocked Friday morning while authorities worked the wreck.

Collins said the incident remains under investigation.

It was not immediately known whether the SUV’s driver would be charged in the incident.
