Thomas Evans, 43, of John Boone Court in Mount Pleasant, is charged with ill treatment of a child.

Mount Pleasant police on Wednesday arrested a 43-year-old man accused of hitting a juvenile with a piece of lumber.

Thomas Evans, of John Boone Court in Mount Pleasant, is charged with ill treatment of a child, Charleston County jail records show.

A Wando High School guidance counselor notified police on Monday about the alleged assault after a student came into her office and cried about an incident that happened the night before, an incident report states.

The student encountered Evans after returning home about 7 p.m. from a trip to the movies, according to the report.

Evans appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, because he had slurred speech and was screaming, according to the report.

The student attempted to leave the home, but Evans repeatedly pressed a button that controlled the garage door, police said.

Evans then grabbed a long piece of wood and hit the student, the report states. The blow caused a bruise to the student’s lower back, police said.

The student managed to leave the house and spent the night with a friend.

The Department of Social Services was notified about the incident, police said.

Evans is being held at the Charleston County jail pending a bond hearing.
