Raskin wins two food writing awards

Hanna Raskin of The Post and Courier has won two awards in the 2013 Association of Food Journalists’ Awards Competition.

She earned both awards while writing for the Seattle Weekly, where she worked prior to joining The Post and Courier in August.

Raskin took second place for “Peaches and Dreams” as best story in the food policy or food issues category. Her story explored how the current generation of craft food producers is negotiating the meaning of artisanship and the ways in which depressed rural communities are leveraging the concept’s popularity to reinvigorate their economies.

She shared third-place honors with Dan Person in the best food column category. The column consisted of a weekly culinary point-counterpoint blog post in which they sparred over the appropriateness of using chopsticks when eating Americanized Asian food; the merits of Hanukkah latkes; and whether “Top Chef: Seattle” was good for the city.

The awards were announced Sept. 19 at the association’s conference in Park City, Utah. The competition recognized 53 winners in 16 categories of food writing and editing and received 290 entries worldwide. AFJ has sponsored the competition since 1986.
