Colleton County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a shooting that happened late Sunday.
Authorities responded to 212 Cumberland St. off Green Pond Highway about 11:30 p.m. and found a male who had been shot in the leg. The man had walked up to a house asking for help after he was wounded, according to Chief Deputy Ted Stanfield.
The man, 26-year-old Maurice Lorenzo Jeffcoat, told deputies he had been robbed, authorities said.
Jeffcoat told deputies he was walking down Windwood Street and stopped a black Honda sedan to ask for a ride to the store. The victim stated that the driver agreed, and when he pulled out his wallet to give the driver gas money, the driver took his wallet and told him to get out of the car, authorities said.
Jeffcoat then stated that the driver produced a handgun and shot him in the leg, Stanfield said.
The victim told deputies he did not know the driver but described him as black male with short hair, no facial hair, approximately 190 lbs and around 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall.
Jeffcoat was taken to Colleton Medical Center in stable condition, authorities said.
It’s the fourth area shooting this month. An 18-year-old woman was shot on Sept. 10; a 16-year-old male was shot in the upper leg on Sept. 15 and an adult male was shot in the head on Sept. 17.
Anyone who may have more information about this shooting and robbery is asked to contact the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office at 843-549-2211 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
