The former Books-a-Million store in West Ashley will soon turn the page on its vacancy for most of this year.
Irving, Texas-based Michaels craft store plans to take over the roughly 20,000-square-foot building, according to property owner Steve Varn.
The shop at Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Orleans Road beside Best Buy housed the bookstore until February, when it closed.
The craft store should open by March. Refurbishment of the free-standing building will start soon.
Varn called the opening “a good sign for retail” in an area that has been smarting from the troubles at Citadel Mall and a rash of other closings.
Michaels has other stores in the area in North Charleston and Mount Pleasant.

Another brewery is headed to North Charleston.
Freehouse Brewery is looking to open this fall at 2895 Pringle St. off Azalea Drive in North Charleston.
It takes its name from owner Arthur Lucas’ time in the United Kingdom, when some pubs called free houses could sell what they wanted while others owned by large breweries had to meet a sales quota of their owner’s beer and offered a limited selection.
Freehouse will join several other coastal brewers, including Coast, Westbrook, Holy City, Palmetto, Frothy Beard and the still-formulating Olde Charlestowne Brewing Co. headed for West Ashley.
