Coroner: Body of retired general found in SC pond
CONWAY — Authorities say the body of an 86-year-old retired general has been found in an Horry County pond.
Coroner Robert Edge says emergency responders found retired U.S. Army Lt. General James B. Vaught’s body on Friday afternoon.
Edge says Vaught’s family called authorities after he didn’t return home from a visit to the pond. Emergency responders found his body in the pond and say they think he fell off of his pontoon boat into the water.
Edge says an autopsy shows Vaught died of asphyxia due to drowning but also showed signs of cardiac disease.
Vaught was drafted in 1945 and retired in 1983. He served with several divisions, including the 82nd Airborne, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as chief of staff for the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg.
