A North Charleston man died Sunday in a traffic crash on Interstate 26 in the Midlands as he and his friends returned from a weekend road trip to Atlanta, according to the Newberry County coroner.
Steve Allen Kaufmann, 26, died at the scene of the wreck on eastbound I-26 near the interchange with S.C. Highway 202 in the Little Mountain area, Coroner Craig Newton said. He was wearing a seat belt.
Kaufmann had been engaged to be married and had worked for Coleman Marine Supply on Morrison Drive in downtown Charleston.
He was a passenger in the back seat of a 2009 Hyundai driven by 31-year-old Matthew Hatch, the S.C. Highway Patrol reported.
About 6:05 p.m. near Mile Marker 87 on I-26, the Hyundai collided with a 2012 Buick driven by 54-year-old Teresa Mimmons of Bamberg, Trooper Billy Elder said.
Hatch and another passenger in his Hyundai were injured. Hatch was taken to Richland Memorial Hospital, and the passenger, who was not immediately identified, was hospitalized at Lexington Medical Center.
No charges immediately resulted from the wreck. Elder said the Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team, or MAIT, is looking into what caused it.
