ST. STEPHEN — Hydraulic oil spilled into the Lake Moultrie rediversion canal Monday from a turbine at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers power plant.
The spill has been contained and clean-up plans are underway, an Army Corps spokesman said in a statement, characterizing the spill as relatively minor.
The spill occurred during routine maintenance and the cause is under investigation, the spokesman said.
The St. Stephen Powerhouse is a hydropower plant, producing electricity from the flow of water out of the lake to the Santee River.
