“We’re taking the organization to the next level,” co-founder Nicholai Burton said in a statement. “Last winter, we reinvigorated our leadership and rededicated ourselves to the mission of enriching the community through film. We’ve been working hard to enhance our programming, our community outreach, and the shorts festival.”
The Shorts Festival is a juried event featuring Charleston-area filmmakers as judges.
A record 179 entries from 25 countries were received, and 32 selections by local national and international filmmakers have made the competitive cut for this year’s festival. So far, the festival has screened more than 70 films from eight countries.
This year, the festival opens with a short starring Rick Gomez (“Band of Brothers” and “Justified”) and closes with “Weighting.” The latter is a piece co-written and co-directed by and starring Brie Larson. It won the 2013 SXSW Grand Jury Award and Audience Award.
Trailers for 24 of the films can be viewed on the PCF YouTube channel, and a Twitter list of filmmakers and contributors is located at twitter.com/parkcirclefilms/lists/lowcountry-shorts-fest.
Park Circle Films, a volunteer-driven nonprofit founded in 2008, has received two new grants, a Zucker Family Foundation award and the Created Equal award from the National Endowment for the Humanities, which will be used to enhance its programming and mission. The organization will be offering more screenings and encouraging filmmaker collaboration. For more, visit parkcirclefilms.org.
Correction: A previous version of this story, relying on a press release, misidentified the closing film by Brie Larson. It is “Weighting, “ not “Short Term 12.”
