The former Sofa Superstore in Mount Pleasant won’t become an alcoholic beverage superstore as expected. Instead, it will become a vendors’ market called Mount Pleasant Mall.
The 25,800-square-foot building at 708 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. has been leased by Chris McFarland, who has about 75 vendors lined up to sell everything from pre-owned furniture to accessories. McFarland said it’s not a flea market, but an upscale resale shop much like a consignment store with a mix of antiques and other items. She hopes to open in October, pending final town permits.
After more than 70 years at 830 Folly Road on James Island, Trudy’s School of Dance has moved. The new location at 1291 Folly Road in Island Plaza boasts two studios under one roof with classes offered seven days a week for all levels of dancers ages 21/2 to senior citizens.
Muddy Creek Farmers Market is open at 6027 Highway 165 behind Hardee’s in Ravenel. It’s open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Look for fresh produce and other items.
On the way
Belk/Lucy commercial real estate has announced several new stores. An unnamed nail salon will open this year at 320 W. Coleman Blvd. The 1,700-square-foot shop will be operated by Kent Pham in the Shops of Mount Pleasant.
UltraSkin Wax Center leased a 2,000-square-foot shop at 975 Savannah Highway in St. Andrews Shopping Center in West Ashley.
Bangkok Asian Bistro leased a 1,560-square-foot space at 1055 Highway 41 in Station 41 shopping center in Mount Pleasant.
And Eos Art Supply leased a 1,036-square-foot shop at 1405 Ben Sawyer Blvd. in Mount Pleasant.
Mount Pleasant has a new place to be pampered. Seaside Spa, operated by Dina Leaird, a former manager of Face- logic, opened at 1909 Highway 17, Suite A, in Sweetgrass Corner Shopping Center near the Isle of Palms Connector. It offers facials, spray tanning, body waxing, massage organic body treatments.
A rise of dollar stores continues. Family Dollar is poised to open a new 8,200-square-foot shop at 7790 Dorchester Road in North Charleston this week, according to Phil Rose with Twin Rivers Capital. He said at least three or four others are on the way throughout the Charleston region.
What is it?
Passers-by are wondering what’s going on in the building under construction in front of Mount Pleasant Towne Centre. According to town officials, one part of it will either be a Verizon store or an AT&T shop while the other half is a speculative space, meaning no tenant has been lined up. The restaurant chain Chipotle eyed the site, or one close to it, a year or so ago, but there’s no indication it’s going there.
Downtown Charleston has a new custom clothing shop. Charleston Stitch opened over the weekend at 493 King St., Suite 101, near Stars Restaurant. A product of owner Tyler Stone, the shop offers customers a chance to look through a swatch book, get measured and participate in creating their own clothing.
It’s open 11 a.m. until around dinner time seven days a week.
