An employee at the Dorchester County jail was arrested today in connection with $80,000 that went missing from the St. George facility, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.
Lillian L. Thomas, 44, of Mount Carmel Road in Walterboro faces charges of breach of trust more than $10,000, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and misconduct in office, a misdemeanor that carries up to one year behind bars.
As program officer at the jail, Thomas was responsible for taking the cash, money orders and checks that the jail received and depositing them into bank accounts, according to SLED.
SLED agents investigating the case said that Thomas acknowledged “stealing an unknown amount in cash deposits,” according to arrest affidavits.
An Aug. 28 audit of jail funds revealed that $80,306.10 had gone missing between Jan. 1 and July 31, the documents stated.
Thomas remained in jail this afternoon.
