A Lowcountry woman is accused of embezzling more than $1,000 from the federal government by taking the Social Security benefits of another person who died.

A federal grand jury in Charleston handed down an indictment against Laura Beth Dupree on Tuesday, court records show. She is charged with one count of theft of government property.

The indictment offers few details about the alleged theft and it does not identify the dead person whose benefits are at issue in the case. The indictment accuses Dupree of embezzling the benefits over a four-year period beginning in June 2009.

Dupree, a 53-year-old Bonneau resident, is scheduled to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Charleston on Sept. 24.

It was unclear from the filing whether she has legal representation.
